Marang Villa is a 4-bedroom villa in Camps Bay, sleeping up to 8. It has a private pool, sea views and views up to the Twelve Apostles. Practical bits: air conditioning, WiFi, off-street parking and a braai area. This property does not accept pets. The address is 16 Rontree Avenue, 8005 Cape Town. That is a short drive down to the beach, and about twenty minutes into the city bowl.
Marang Villa is dressed more formally than most houses on this mountain, and it carries it well.
A curved paved driveway climbs past a sandstone retaining wall to garaging beneath the house, the mountain filling everything behind. The villa steps down the slope in clean white planes. Between the building and the stone wall lies a sheltered courtyard holding a long mosaic-edged pool in travertine paving, shaded at one end by coral trees, with an umbrella and a small table set where the ground falls away to the sea. A teak table and white cushioned wicker seating occupy the terrace above.
Herringbone parquet runs through the ground floor. The lounge is arranged around a tan leather corner sofa and a marble coffee table, with carved antique armchairs, gilt mirrors and a coffered ceiling lit from a cove; Lion's Head sits neatly in the window. The dining room rises to double height behind black steel-framed glazing, with a travertine-topped table for eight and velvet chairs.
Pale grey shaker cabinetry with glazed X-fronted uppers, a timber extractor hood, brass tapware and a farmhouse sink. The island is topped in marble with acrylic bar stools pulled up to it, and chandeliers hang over both the island and the adjoining dining area.
One bedroom opens by sliding door straight into the pool courtyard, with a charcoal button-back headboard and a tufted ottoman at the foot of the bed. Another looks to sea through sliding glass, gilt-framed art on the wall and parquet underfoot. Both are air-conditioned. The entrance hall deserves a pause on the way past: a wall of steel-framed glass, floating black stair treads under a glass balustrade, and a Persian runner across the parquet.
